Hold these hands, will you please

They are worn from holding

Often holding tightly to far too much

And need themselves to be held

Rough and calloused, nothing pretty

Every finger wears a badge

Scars that contain forgotten stories

Freshly cut by earth and stone

Hold these hands, could you?

Feel them for yourself

Often times, tough skin is built

To protect gentleness and compassion

That lives beneath

Do hands reflect the heart?

Hand & Heart – A mirror image?

A different shape with the same plot:

To hold on to everything

A heavy heart is a tired hand

Thank God there are often two

Oh what these hands would let go of

To be held and to be known

To joyfully release their stories

These Hands

The heart is far more stubborn

Unable or unwilling to let go

Imagine what treasure you might find

Underneath a tough-skinned heart

Perhaps unseen at sight’s first glance

This heart, and these hands, are beautiful
